How It Works

This calculator compares the year, month, and day of your date of birth with the year, month, and day of the "as of" date, the same way you would count age by hand on a calendar. It does not simply divide total days by 365, which would give a slightly wrong answer because months have different lengths and leap years add an extra day.

The calculation subtracts year from year, month from month, and day from day. If the day subtraction goes negative, it borrows days from the previous month. If the month subtraction goes negative, it borrows a year and adds 12 months.

Worked Example

Someone born on May 20, 1990 checking their age on July 7, 2026, would be calculated as follows. Years: 2026 minus 1990 equals 36. Months: July (7) minus May (5) equals 2. Days: 7 minus 20 is negative, so the calculator borrows the days in June (30) giving 7 plus 30 minus 20 equals 17 days, and reduces the month count by one, from 2 to 1. The result is 36 years, 1 month, and 17 days old.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculator count leap years?

Yes. The age is worked out using real calendar dates, so leap years are handled automatically because February 29 exists in the calendar for leap years and simply does not exist in others.

Why does my age in months and days look different from a simple day count?

This tool calculates age the way a calendar does, by comparing year, month, and day values directly, rather than dividing total days by 30 or 365. That means the months and days shown match how you would count age by hand on a calendar.

Can I calculate my age as of a future or past date instead of today?

Yes. Use the "As of date" field to pick any date, and the calculator will show your age, total days lived, and days to the next birthday relative to that date instead of today.

What happens if I was born on February 29?

Your birthday is treated as falling on February 29 in leap years. In non-leap years, the calculator counts the next birthday as March 1, which is the standard convention most calendars and record systems use.

Is this calculator accurate for legal or medical age requirements?

The math is accurate for standard calendar age, but always check the specific rule for your situation. Some legal contexts (such as when someone turns a certain age) have their own definitions that can differ slightly from calendar age.
