How It Works

The total day count is worked out by converting both dates to a fixed reference point (midnight UTC) and finding the difference in days, so results are not affected by daylight saving time changes. That total is then also shown in whole weeks with a remainder, and broken down into years, months, and days the same way a calendar would, by comparing the year, month, and day values of each date directly.

When the business day option is turned on, the calculator steps through each day in the range and counts every day that falls Monday through Friday. It does not exclude public holidays, since those differ by country.

Worked Example

From March 1, 2026 to June 15, 2026 is 106 days, which is 15 weeks and 1 day, or 3 months and 14 days on the calendar. If you also check business days for that same range, the count comes to 75 weekdays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the count include both the start and end date?

The total is the number of days between the two dates, not the number of calendar days touched. For example, January 1 to January 2 is 1 day apart. If you need an inclusive count, add 1 to the result.

How are the months and years figured out?

The calculator compares the year, month, and day of each date directly, the same way you would count on a calendar, rather than dividing total days by 30 or 365. This gives an accurate breakdown even though months have different lengths.

What counts as a business day?

Business days here means Monday through Friday. The tool does not exclude public holidays, since those vary by country and region.

Can I use this to count down to a future event?

Yes. Set the start date to today and the end date to the event date, and the result shows how many days, weeks, months, and years remain.

What happens if I enter the end date before the start date?

The calculator will show an error and ask you to check the dates. Enter the earlier date as the start date and the later date as the end date.
