How It Works

A tip calculator earns its place at the table because mental math gets harder after a long meal or a few drinks, and nobody wants to hold up the group while they try to work out 18 percent of an odd number like $73.40. It is also useful for splitting a bill among a group with different appetites for tipping generously, since you can quickly compare what the total looks like at 15 percent versus 20 percent before agreeing on a number.

The tip amount is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. The total is the bill plus that tip. The amount per person is the total divided by the number of people splitting it evenly.

Worked Example

A $84 bill with an 18 percent tip and 3 people splitting it works out as follows. Tip: 84 times 0.18 equals $15.12. Total: 84 plus 15.12 equals $99.12. Per person: 99.12 divided by 3 equals $33.04.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the tip amount calculated?

The tip amount is the bill amount multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100.

How is the amount per person worked out?

The total bill, which is the original bill plus the tip, is divided evenly by the number of people splitting it. This assumes everyone pays an equal share.

What is a typical tip percentage?

In the United States, 15 to 20 percent is common for restaurant service. Norms vary by country and by type of service, so use the custom field if the quick-select buttons do not match your situation.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

This is a personal preference. Some people tip on the subtotal before tax, others tip on the total including tax. Enter whichever bill amount you want to base the tip on.

Can I split the bill unevenly between people?

This calculator splits the total evenly across the number of people you enter. For an uneven split, calculate each person's share separately based on what they ordered.

Does the custom tip percentage field accept decimals?

Yes. You can enter a value like 17.5 percent if you want a tip amount between the quick-select buttons, and the calculation updates the same way it would for a whole number.
