How It Works

Length, weight, and volume conversions work by converting the input value to a common base unit (meters, grams, or milliliters), then converting that base value to the target unit. Temperature conversions use dedicated formulas since Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin do not share a common zero point.

Worked Example

To convert 10 miles to kilometers: 10 miles times 1609.344 (meters per mile) equals 16,093.44 meters, and 16,093.44 meters divided by 1,000 (meters per kilometer) equals 16.09344 kilometers.

To convert 100 degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit: 100 times 9/5 equals 180, plus 32 equals 212 degrees Fahrenheit, the boiling point of water at sea level.
